Requiescat in Pace Pixel

All three cats are currently congregating around a bag of pretzels laying on the floor and watching while Pixel noses at it....and I just filled the food-dish 30 min ago.

If they figure out how to open the beer...I'm running screaming for the hills

Catrees

When [livejournal.com profile] kanigem moved out of state, she left behind a cat tree. She offered it to me on the principle of "Give it to someoen that might use it, rather than ditching it in the trash." I accepted, but figured I'd end up with it never being used and I'd pass it off or toss it since the fuzzballs have never been much interested in them before.

They didn't seem too interested in it, until we made one modification. Its a 3 tier tree with a quarterbarrel on top and bottom and a full but open ended barrel in the middle that had a catface on it that blocked 2/3rds of the open end. We left it a few days and then [livejournal.com profile] kokuten and I went "yeh, thats gotta go" and ripped the catface out of the barrel(and wow was that an ordeal..it was in there SOLID).

Well...they changed their minds after that. Pixel immediately glommed onto the top perch, and Vickie went after the bottom. Rev waffled back and forth on where he wanted, and I even watched Vickie muscle him off the bottom quarterbarrel once. But, once we put a towel into the center barrel he glommed onto it and hangs out there all the time now.

Guess the cat tree stays :-)

It seems that my mother, via one of her pseudo-grandkids(since neither I nor any of my siblings have reproduced yet, she went out and "adopted") is now the proud owned by of a cat.

This is a touch surprising, because even though we've had cats my whole life they've always been someone elses. Mudball was M's, Perc was mine and then Dad's, Teka is most Definitely M's, Angel was just the house cat and didn't glom onto any one person, Huggabear was S's, and there were a few others in there that I can't recall. But this new fellow has glommed onto Mom, and as far as she can remember he's the first since Charlie Brown, who died when I was a toddler.

So, without further adieu....Capt Jack the kitten

Cleanout

Its been a long week. Spent a good portion of it traveling, and doing afterhours installs.

I didn't want to attempt to tackle anything requiring serious brainpower this weekend, so [livejournal.com profile] angie_di and I cleaned the house, and cleaned some more, and cleaned some more. Ended up with three full bags of junk to toss, and a spotless living/dining/kitchen. Since we were on a cleaning binge..the cats caught the fringe of it and all three were dragged into the bathroom and bathed. They may start talking to us again someday, but atleast they're all clean and shiny for now. I'm not sure what offended them more...the indignity of being bathed, or the being locked out of the bedrooms till they dried(the front part of the house was clean and swept and vacuumed, but the bedrooms had not been yet).

Next step was to replace the shower curtain in the bathroom(it needed it) and then finally retire the sheet of cardboard thats been in my bedroom window as a light blocker for the last 8 years. I installed a blackout curtain in its place, and it seems to be working well enough, but I won't know for sure till next weekend.

All in all it was a productive weekend, and I feel better about the house now. Its almost ready for Halloween and the party now :-)

I just got the crap scared out of me.

For ages I've had a big 21" CRT monitor as my primary monitor and it had lots of space on top of it...enough that atleast two cats could sleep up there at the same time(and this is likely what killed it). After that monitor died I replaced it with a 24" LCD that has maybe a 2 inch deep top surface on it and most definitely can't hold one even one cat, much less two.

Today, Pixel decided to test out this new monitor and made a leap for it. Amazingly, she was able to find purchase enough to land on the top of it, and stay standing for a halfsecond or so before the monitor sunk to the stops on the riser, and I reached up to grab her before she fell forward(she fell backward). Scared the heck out of me. Silly animal.

This was too cute not to shoot. I had to CREEEEPPPP backwards on my chair to reach the couch and grab my camera before they moved and not startle any of them into running.

I was mucking out the truck last night so I had space for the tadpoles and friend in the back seat and I moved a bunch of stuff inside the house. Once I got done I looked at the living room couch and went "Damn..that needs cleaned off bad." So I cleaned up and put away everything on the couch and most of the rest of the living room(Barring my desk and the end table). I got done and it looked decent...atleast enough to settle the cleaning bug.

I sit down to check email before going to bed and hear a soft whispery sound behind me and turn....and my couch is no longer clean. Now there are 2 cats laying on it(and one sniffing at it) and giving me this look of "Its about TIME you cleaned off our perch!" heh

Poor Vickie. She was sitting on my monitor with her paws facing me and her tail draped over the back...and she was looking off out the door. I moved my hand up to touch her paws and she didn't see it, and when i touched her paws she startled and BOOM, jumped backward......right off the monitor onto the floor.

I do believe that Pixel just expressed her opinion of my taking photos of the cats this afternoon.

I haven't shot the cats in awhile because the few times they've done anything cute they've bolted at me pulling out the camera. But this afternoon Vickie was lounging on the couch leaning against the arm, Rev was doing his best to copy the Pixel Fringe on my monitor, and Pixel was snubbing me by sitting on the stool next to the computer with her back to me.

So, out comes the camera...and its just too dim to get decent handheld shots of any of the cats. So I slowly snag the flash, and proceed to attempt to photograph Rev and his amazing portable black hole, and Pixel on the stool(she actually turned around for me) and Vickie lounging. After a bit, Pixel hops down...wanders to the couch, and hops up on it. Where she proceeds to SIT on my camera bag to tell me what she thinks of all this.

Sheesh!

It's a quantum physics thing. Cats follow the uncertainty principle. If you are looking at them, you collapse the waveform function and fix their position in space-time. However, if nobody is looking, cats can use the probabilistic nature of reality to effectively "tunnel" through space, much like electrons. The only difference is, electrons don't look so cute doing it.

Strangeness

You'd think that Pixel, who will lay on anything that keeps her off the floor or puts her up high where she can see, would LOVE a nice comfy cat bed. So the last time I was at Costco I spotted one for $20 and snatched it up, thinking she'd love it.

Boy was I wrong. She wouldn't go near it, and if set in it ran immediately..if you dropped her in it she bounced and was gone(even though she likes being dropped on [livejournal.com profile] kokuten's bed). I finally gave up even trying to get her to try it.

Last night I tossed it off the couch and left it on the floor...and it was on the floor in her usual "Sleeping in a soda case box" spot. I'd kicked the caselot box out of the way earlier and that was as good a place to leave the unused cat bed as any.

This evening I look over at the cat bed.....and there's a grey mass in it. That twit of a cat was SPRAWLED in it shamelessly, and is rolling around and flopping on her back and generally just enjoying the hell out of the cat bed she snubbed for a week and a half. Silly thing...

I think it got chilly in the house last night. I woke up with Rev curled up UNDER the blanket next to my leg. Really unusual for him...but nice and warm too :-)

And Vickie's fascination with the hall closet almost comes back to bite her in the butt. I had gotten ready for work and was getting dressed, and heard her whining and shuffling somewhere...I walk out of my room and see a kittypaw coming out from under the closet door. Silly thing had been still inside the closet when I closed the door after getting stuff out of there. Would have sucked for her to spend the day in there.
